Also known as the Corpse Stone or Cross Stone, this 18 inch high stone is located in St Luke’s churchyard, Formby. It dates back to the 10th century, coinciding with Viking settlement. There are several theories as to it’s purpose, such as to convert Vikings to Christianity, where the symbols represent heaven and Earth. A ceremony was also thought to have taken place where corpses were carried around the stone 3 times to contain the spirit and prevent it haunting relatives!
This 16 shaft double weave design depicts the cross, steps and sun from the Godstone carving. The interlacement of the two layers of cloth results in a beautiful colour mixing effect, mirroring the soft shades of Formby’s pinewoods and beach.
