A hidden woven message to represent the story of Formby; to encompass many aspects of Formby’s history and landscape.

Vertical

1. Formby Lighthouse - built in 1719 as a landmark for shipping at the mouth of the Mersey. A light was added in 1831, but the structure was pulled down in 1941 so as not to attract WWII bombers

2. Pine trees - the 100 year old plantation stretches 6.5k. Originally planted by landowners for income but was more successful protecting the dunes from the elements.

3. Asparagus - cultivated in reclaimed sand and grown in ridges.

Horizontal

4. Coastline - shifting sand dunes and flooding, coastal erosion and deposition have forced the people of Formby to adapt to the changing environment.

5. Sand dunes - recognised as one of the most important dune systems in NW Europe. Home to many rare species of flora and fauna, such as the Natterjack toad. Human footprints imprinted in silt 4,500-7,000 years ago and hard baked by the sun can also be found.

6. Lifeboat - the first lifeboat station in the UK was est. in 1776 on Formby beach, but was constantly rebuilt due to storms. The last launch was in 1916.

7. Red squirrels - Formby’s favourite inhabitants!
